Living, or wanting to live with large breasts

Breasts are no longer kept under wraps. They are very much on display and, consequently, there is an ever-increasing dissatisfaction about breast size.

Surgery can offer relief for women whose breasts are too large and uncomfortable. But if, on the opposite side, you have small breasts, try not to be too influenced by the provocative images of large breasts that you see in the media. After all, are these really the kind of breasts we should be aspiring to, and will the fashion even last?

Women want to feel comfortable about revealing their breasts without being embarrassed about their size. Nowadays, breast size can be altered by surgery, but like any medical procedure, it is not without risk and is carried out under general anaesthetic. The decision to have surgery shouldn't be taken lightly and should be made jointly with your surgeon, after careful reflection and consideration.

Want large breasts and are thinking about breast implants?

Many women think their breasts too small and today, implants can be used to make them bigger.

There are two types of implants: silicone and saline. Silicone gives best results in terms of appearance and feel. When saline implants are used in very thin women, they can form small unattractive ridges, caused by water on the top of the implant, that are visible under the skin. The surgeon should warn you about this. Fortunately, the scar left by surgery, around the nipple or under the arm, is almost invisible.

Choosing the right breast implant size

Cosmetic surgeon and breast specialist, Dr Jean Mason, emphasizes that "surgeons should suggest the implant size that is best rather than leaving it to the women." In addition, he states that it is important not to be influenced by photographs of "overinflated" celebrities. And remember, no implant is ideal. Occasionally, a hard shell can form around the implant. This is an unforeseeable consequence of surgery but your surgeon should warn you about this in advance. Finally, implants don't last indefinitely and will need to be replaced every 10-15 years.

Be careful! Don't get stung!

Implants are not provided on the NHS and cost between £3,000 and £5,000. The surgeon has a legal obligation to provide you with an estimate for the cost of the operation and all other information you may need so that you can make a fully informed decision. This decision, of course, should not be taken lightly.

If you feel handicapped by naturally large breasts...

Your breasts are too large; they've troubled you since adolescence, making it difficult for you to play sport or dress well. Some may round their shoulders in an attempt to hide what you perceive to be an abnormal body shape. Many may feel handicapped by large breasts and find them difficult to live with. It's also possible to reduce breast size with specialised surgery.

This procedure, called mammary reduction is available on the NHS and offers real relief. However, the operation does leave a permanent scar - in the shape of an anchor - but that does tend to fade over time. It you're planning on having the operation but also want children, you should know that breast reduction usually makes it impossible to breastfeed. If your breasts are sexually sensitive, you should also know that you may lose all sensitivity for sometime. This is rarely permanent but is unavoidable. You should discuss all this with your surgeon before you take your final decision.
