Masturbation

Gentlemen, take your pleasure in hand!

Men admit to masturbating excessively as teenagers but are more reluctant to confess to doing so as adults. The basic technique is very simple but there are many different ways of reaching, and learning to control, orgasm.

Almost all men use manual stimulation to masturbate. The most common technique is to hold the entire penis and then move the hand up and down the shaft. Normally, the glans head remains partially covered during this movement although the speed, rhythm and tightness of grip will vary between individuals.

There are also different ways of holding the penis; some use only two fingers while others use the whole hand. For some pressure is more important than movement. Some touch only a part of the penis, stroking the ventral surface or underneath, near the frenular delta. Others still just stimulate the glans. Some like to fondle and stroke their testicles during masturbation. And some squeeze a scrunched up t-shirt or pair of pyjamas between their legs to further increase the pressure.

Masturbation to discover new erogenous zones

Some men like anal stimulation and, while masturbating, insert one or two fingers, or a dildo, into the rectum. Others stimulate their prostate gland through massage; the combined effects of stimulation and orgasm intensify the sexual sensations. However, very few men bother with the rest of their body, neglecting their stomach, inner thighs, chest, lips, mouth or shoulders.

Some men also masturbate by rubbing; lying face down, pressed against a pillow, bedding, the carpet or sometimes their arm. Others may use vibrators or even direct a jet of water to stimulate the penis.

Masturbation and learning to control your excitement

The techniques that a man uses to masturbate can have a direct effect on his performance during sexual intercourse. For example, someone who grips his penis very tightly will have problems ejaculating inside the vagina which, when it is well lubricated, is not as tight. And if the man is used to masturbating and reaching orgasm quickly, he'll have difficulty adapting to, and satisfying, his partner.

Masturbation isn't just about relieving sexual frustration; men should try to experiment with their sexual pleasure, increasing the excitement and then user slower movements to decrease the level of arousal. If a man is able to masturbate, and control his excitement for 10 or 15 minutes, he should then aim for half an hour. This will help train his body and brain to respond to, and cope with, increased levels of excitement so that he can choose what sort of sex he wants and can last longer in bed.

Masturbation helps develop a man's confidence, particularly about his sexual performance, as it means he is better able to pace himself to his partner's needs. He can cope with the excitement of intercourse, taking time to experiment and try out new moves. After all, there's nothing more frustrating than not being able to control your orgasm.

But don't wait until you're part of a couple to practise. That would be very confusing for your partner and potentially psychologically damaging for you. So while you're alone, take all the time you need to practise (again and again) and to perfect your technique, without fear of humiliation - it's all natural...
