The Spoons
The man and the woman lie on their sides; the man lies behind the woman and penetrates her vaginally. When he’s snuggled up against her, they look exactly like two spoons nestled one against the other.

There are many good things about the Spoons position: it’s comfortable for both partners so they can take it nice and slow; the woman can slowly get into the mood while the man caresses and kisses her. He can stroke her breasts, stomach and genitals. If man moves away from the woman slightly, he can also stroke her back, hips and buttocks.
In the Spoons position, the couple are not limited to rapidly thrusting back and forth so the man can really learn to control his ejaculation. The slow, soft movements don’t over-excite him so he can get used to the feeling of vaginal penetration. Spooning is great for sexual learning; it lets you experiment with different sensations, which is much more difficult in other, more sexually stimulating positions.
Women who like this spooning position talk about how much they enjoy letting go, feeling their body relax under their partner’s tender loving care. They have time to forget their everyday worries, to feel free, to focus on the excitement and gradually succumb to desire.
However, some women don’t like having their back to their partner. After a while, they may be keen to join in the action, to kiss, to hug or rub against their partner. Normally then, this position is just an introductory stage to lovemaking but it is perfect if one partner is either pregnant or overweight.
The emotional force of the Spoons position is very obvious and is perfectly described by one of the characters in Robert Merle’s book, “Weekend at Zuydcoote.” “I remember those evenings; it was filthy weather, raining and so windy I thought our little shack was going to be blown away. I was in bed with my wife, nice and warm, a little light beside us. I tell you, it felt great. I lay behind my wife, holding her tightly, stroking her stomach. God, let me tell you, that really makes you feel like a man! My wife didn’t breathe a word … It felt like we were the last two people on earth. We felt like kings! That’s what life’s all about, if you ask me.”
