The Lotus

In the Lotus position, the lovers sit facing each other, making it ideal for caressing, kissing and tenderness. Kalyanamalla, the author of the erotic Indian text, the Anangaranga, has described it as "the preferred sexual position of lovers". What do you think?

The man sits crossed legged on the bed or the floor, thighs apart and the soles of his feet pressed firmly together. The woman sits on his thighs, facing him, with her legs wrapped around his waist and her feet on the floor or bed.

The intimacy enjoyed by lovers in the Lotus position promotes deep feelings of harmony. The couple begin by sharing long, slow kisses, their tongues seeking out and exploring each other's mouths. For added pleasure, the man can fondle his partner's breasts, squeeze them or kiss them and tenderly bite the nipples. The woman can slide her hand down to the man's crotch, encircling his penis with her thumb and forefinger. Applying gentle pressure, she can move her hand slowly up and down from the base of the penis to the tip, making him groan with pleasure. At the same time, she can rub her wrist or forearm against her vulva. This is guaranteed to excite him even more. The lovers can savour the softness of each other's bodies by stroking their partner's buttocks, backs and shoulders.

At this stage, the woman can start to press against the man's pelvis. By rubbing her vulva along his penis - which, by now, will almost certainly be erect - she will stimulate her clitoris even more. Weakened by desire, she will beg her lover to enter her.

The man then lifts the woman, sliding his erect penis into her vagina. Penetration is easy as the vagina will be naturally lubricated and dilated. However, the woman can also moisten her partner's penis with saliva before penetration, a loving act that will add to the tenderness of the moment. Alternatively, the man can slide his wet fingers over her labia and guide his penis into her vagina.

The man can put both arms around his lover's neck, or his hands on her shoulders and let her set the rhythm of their lovemaking as the Lotus comes to life. Or, he can hold her waist, applying gentle pressure to her buttocks to allow her to "rock" rhythmically. If the woman contracts her perineum, her vagina will tighten around the man's penis, intensifying the sensation for both lovers.

To vary and increase vaginal friction, the man can tilt his pelvis forward either lowering or raising his knees. This will stimulate the women even more, enhancing her pleasure and bringing her to orgasm. If she wants to, the woman can bring one of her legs in towards her body and lift up the other, supporting it with her hand. Again, this movement will help vary the pressure on the penis, unleashing delicious waves of pleasure in both partners.

Contemplation of their lover's ecstasy will heighten their own enjoyment. And that's the wonderful thing about the Lotus position: it allows both partners to give and receive sexual pleasure.
